around & about

From left above, a view of Elsdon from the single-track road to Raylees; the large building at the centre is a Pele tower dating from late medieval times, and originally owned by the Umfraville family; looking up the same road in wintertime; the Elsdon gibbet; a waterfall called the Mill Lin, behind the Mill at the edge of Elsdon on the road towards Rothbury.

Above left, one of the walks in the hills overlooking Elsdon goes to Darden Lough, a deep lake near these rocky outcrops; a bridge which is part of one of the old drovers roads near the mill in the village; a happy drinker sitting over the door of the Bacchus House, which was once one of several pubs in the village (fortunately there is still one open !); right, St. Cuthberts church which dates from about the 11th century.
